03 West Church Carpark (23.5.17)

Posted 23/5/2017

UPDATE MAY 2018

All change!  Fyne Futures have started work on the site of the former church to create a community garden with raised beds for fruit, vegetables and herbs.  Much of what is described below will have disappeared, at least in the short term.  I'm retaining these notes on this 'walk' in their original form as a record of the botanical diversity that could be seen on this site in 2017.  It will serve as a baseline for use in any future survey.

This one is not so much a walk but, rather, a visit to a carpark – but what a carpark!  The main area of interest is the site of the former West Church.  The building was derelict for many years before its demolition in 2015, but nature seized this as an opportunity to provide a wonderful display of colour in late May and June.

The building has gone, but the Fairy Foxglove flowers have now taken over much of the ground where the building stood.  Many other species have also appeared on the site, so that now the purple is joined by yellows, pinks, whites, blues and so on.  At the moment, there are over 30 species in flower, with at least as many again to follow as the season progresses.

So now it’s quite possible to go on a wild flower foray without leaving the carpark!  All identified species are listed below, many of them currently in flower.
